What a piss-weak argu­ment. I am in favour, and that wouldn’t con­vince me. Love? Maybe law school has made me bru­tally cyn­ical, but the argu­ments need to be groun­ded in more con­crete principles.

As far as I’m aware, the three broad strands of mod­ern West­ern polit­ics — lib­er­al­ism, social demo­cracy, con­ser­vat­ism — all sup­port same-sex mar­riage. For lib­er­als it’s about rights, for social demo­crats, it’s equal­ity. And for con­ser­vat­ives — here’s the trump card — it pro­motes fam­ily val­ues. That’s it. That’s all that has to be said. I know for many con­ser­vat­ives that will blow their minds, but it’s not my fault they don’t even live by their own rules.

It was going to hap­pen in our life­time any­way. Keep­ing the mes­sage simple will simply accel­er­ate the process.
