The Australian’s ejaculatory stories about Costello and the Liberal leadership crossed the line of fanaticism some time ago. Here, for the record, is my view:

• Costello is spineless. He will not fight for the leadership. He will not get it.
• Turnbull will never be leader, and has lost support since his near-miss last November.
• Nelson will be challenged by this November.
• The main contenders will be (Julie) Bishop and Abbott. Pyne will for reasons known only to himself throw his hat into the ring. His support can be measured on one hand.
• Bishop will prevail.
• She will lose the next election.
