Arts Revue review

The Arts faculty at Sydney Uni (and indeed most other Australian universities) is regularly derided for the worthlessness of the degrees, and the laziness and hacktivism of the students. I on the other hand have great respect for the students, who don’t have as much free time as people think, and at least have the balls to confront people on important issues.

The derision tends to extend into a general malaise for a whole range of arts activities on campus. This unfortunately includes the Arts revue, which was at best at half-capacity last night. The Law revue

in contrast was fully-booked despite stark differences in quality between them. I shall explain.

The lack of an explicit theme worked in the Arts revue’s favour. It allowed it to be very free-flowing, a refreshing reprieve from the highly structured acts in the other revues. The perceived spontaneity of the skits and jokes was backed up by strong acting and excellent delivery, the kinds of qualities you’d expect from a sterling comedy troupe.

While the Law revue tended to focus on inter-academic and race/cultural jokes, Arts’ skits involved highly relatable “ordinary” situations: scorned ex-partners, bed-side etiquette, meeting-the-parents, awkward “I-love-yous”. This created an air of decided un-pretension, and triggered a lot of well-deserved laughs. All this on a shoe-string budget. Congratulations guys (and girls).
